Welcome to Rowan Class.
Rowan class is a mixed class of Year 4 and 5 children. The class
teacher is Mr Ware.
To complete my NQT year and already knowing the children, I was keen to join the Oakhill School community. My classroom aim is to support the children in their learning through a variety of active, fun and creative activities. I hope to extend their confidence and inspire their drive to learn and develop.
In Rowan Class, we aim to encourage a positive attitude to both our learning and the community around us. There is a focus on our presentation, to ensure our efforts can be assessed and appreciated.
Following our school values, we learn to show a caring attitude and a willingness to help those around us. These values and our positive attitude help develop our sense of respect and awareness for the world we live in.
We encourage our children to succeed and take pride in their work and behaviour.
The class has two School Councillors who are on hand to welcome visitors and listen to ideas and concerns of their fellow classmates.
In Writing, the children will continually be exposed to a variety of sentences types including simple, compound and complex sentences. They will learn how to layout their writing in paragraphs as well as simple devises including headings and sub-headings.
In addition, the children will learn and develop their spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) so they can communicate effectively. This works in tandem with proof reading and editing so they can review their work and make the necessary alterations.
The children learn column addition and subtraction and regularly apply this throughout the year to solve problems. In addition, they are taught how to check their answers using the inverse operation.
Weekly, we complete times table activities with the intention of building our confidence and mastering arithmetic, a skill that will remain with us and be used ongoing. By the end of Year 4, children should be confident in recalling facts from all times tables including x6, x7, x9, x11 and x12.
We will also be developing their knowledge base on the properties of shapes and decimals, while introducing new mathematical topics including position and direction, converting units and estimating volume.
Each term we have a History or Geography based topic. These Topics included the Victorians, rivers, the Tudors and mountains. We are taught a range of skills including research, using maps and making observations and comparisons. We draw on our previous knowledge and ask questions to gain insight.
We also have a Science Topic every Term where we use our scientific skills to investigate materials, rocks, light, sound, animals and humans.
All Homework will be given out on a Friday and due back in on the following Friday.
Weekly spellings will also be given out on a Monday and their spelling test will take place on the following Monday.
